It’s exciting to be returning to radio after seven years. I will be co-hosting 2000FM’s new week daily sports show GAME ON with Victor Khasu, starting today, 3 to 4pm.
Radio is no coincidence in my life. I was obsessed with radio as a teenager, giddily following the goings on at Capital Radio, my favourite radio station. The AM frequency was never a deterrent, in fact it added to the allure of the station.
When I was 16, I attended a radio DJ course while living in KZN. The course ran over a few days, and covered the basics of radio. I am glad I attended the course – it gave me confidence to kick on and pursue my career in media, and provided a good basis for my journalism course which followed.
In 1999, three months after moving to Johannesburg, I got the chance of a lifetime, to work for Talk Radio 702. In the two and a half years I was there, I worked harder than I had ever worked, and that was the unspoken motto of everyone there.
Looking back, my apprenticeship at 702 set me up as a radio presenter, and the hard work paid off when I got to host SAFM’s week daily sports show, Gameplan, in 2003.
In mid-2006 I decided to quit radio to throw my weight behind women’s sport. I launched gsport4girls, and have spent the past seven years helping raise the profile of women in sport.
I am humbled by the opportunity to get back to doing what I love. Radio is my most favourite medium; it’s intimate and generates authentic discussions.
GAME ON will appeal to everyone from cricket coaches to soccer moms. That’s what attracted me to 2000FM; it speaks to a diverse audience.
So, tune in to GAME ON – Monday to Friday, 97.2 -100fm nationwide
