Since I broke into sports broadcasting in 2003, I have stuck to cricket anchoring and commentating, so it was refreshing to be given the opportunity to anchor my first-ever multi-sport event in July 2014.

I hosted SABC Sport’s coverage of the 2014 Commonwealth Games from Johannesburg with a team, including co-anchors Andile Ncube and Duane Dell’Oca, and analysts, Natalie du Toit, Dingaan Thobela and Mampho Tsotetsi.

What I enjoyed most was having incredible conversations in studio about South Africa’s gutsy showing at the Games, finishing off with thirteen gold medals sparkling among Team SA’s haul of 40 medals, and ending seventh on the medals table.

My favourite moments were when the Springbok Sevens won Gold and also the success of our Judo and Bowls teams.

On a few occasions, medallists joined us in studio to relive those winning moment in Glasgow and it was wonderful to hear first-hand what it meant to them to represent South Africa on the world stage.

This experience has ignited my interest in a variety of sporting codes that I have previously not paid much attention to. Great experience and certainly one for the memory bank!
