“You’re still a baby,” cries the legendary Martin Locke, as I call to reminisce and say thank you for the support early on in my career.

I laughed, because at 42, some may say I am getting old, but not in cricket broadcasting.

Locke is quick to remind me that he has just turned 80 and I have a long way to go.

He is right. There are still many chapters to be written.

This weekend marks 17 years since I made my cricket broadcasting debut for SABC.

On 8 February 2003, I stood in for Robert Marawa as host of the the broadcaster’s 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup breakfast show.

The very next day, 9 February 2003, I anchored my first ever cricket match when I hosted the tournament opener between South Africa and West Indies.

When I was 14, I  was inspired by the great Donna Symmonds to be a cricket commentator.

Her golden voice was so persuasive. I found myself watching cricket for hours just to hear her commentate.

I knew I was hooked and I had found my true calling at 14.

I am glad I followed my heart and that I continue to do so.

It was good to chat to Martin Locke and other key mentors who have shaped my journey.

Enjoying some real full circle moments this past week!
