I find it hard to receive awards. Perhaps it’s because I am a giver and I prefer lauding others than taking accolades.

So, a few months ago, when I was called by the organizers of the Charlotte Mannya Maxeke Institute to notify me that I will be honoured for my work to raise the profile of women’s sport, I ran for cover 😅

I started looking for ways to decline the honour, but the more I found excuses the less believable they were.

After many days of contemplation and yoga, I accepted the invitation to attend. I took my mother with me and I accepted the award with grace.

I have always known that the work we do at‌ gsport is valuable but this accolade made me sit up and take stock of how far we have come after launching our big vision all those years ago in a tiny room among a handful of women.

In 2019, gsport is virtually unrecognizable. We are now living our vision of raising the profile of women’s sport and encouraging better corporate support for our women athletes.

Recognition is important and when accepted, it helps us grow into the best version of ourselves.

So yes, awards play a great role in identifying talent and celebrating those who stand out from the pack.

Thank you to the CMMI for this wonderful honour in August. I will cherish this and use it to inspire even more support for women’s sport in 2020!
